Sonja Mühlberger - An Eyewitness to Exile: The Jewish Experience in Shanghai
Sonja Mühlberger (née Krips), born in 1939 to Jewish parents in Shanghai and remigrated to the Soviet Sector in Berlin at age 7, is one of the most recognized emigrants and survivors of the Holocaust in Shanghai. In June 2019, she was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesverdienstkreuz) for her extraordinary contributions to commemorating and documenting the Jewish experience in Shanghai, which culminated in the registry of names featured on the wall in front of the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum. Her 2006 memoir, Geboren in Shanghai als Kind von Emigranten. Leben und Überleben im Ghetto von Hongkew (1939-1947) and her edited volume Exil Shanghai: Jüdisches Leben in der Emigration 1938 -1947 further chronicle the history and lives of Jews in exile. In this talk, Mühlberger will share her family’s story and discuss the Jewish experience in the Hongkew Ghetto with personal materials from the 40s.
